Serbia is one of those places that catches you off guard. Great nightlife, Orthodox monasteries you've never heard of, grilled meat that will ruin you for other cuisines, and locals who will invite you for a drink like they've known you for years. You could spend weeks here, but if you've only got a weekend, here's how to make the most of Belgrade and Novi Sad.

Day 1: Belgrade — Knez Mihailova & Kalemegdan
Fly into Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG). Take bus A1 to the city center (€3, 30 minutes).
Afternoon: Walk Knez Mihailova Street — Belgrade's main pedestrian boulevard. Explore the Bohemian quarter of Skadarlija, where 19th-century poets once gathered. Have lunch at a traditional kafana.
Evening: Visit Kalemegdan Fortress at sunset — the view where the Sava and Danube rivers meet is spectacular. Walk through the park, see the Military Museum, and watch the sunset from the river overlook.
Night: Belgrade is famous for its nightlife. Visit a splav (floating river club) on the Sava or Danube for an unforgettable night out.
Day 2: Novi Sad & Petrovaradin Fortress
Take a train from Belgrade to Novi Sad (35 minutes, €5).
Morning: Explore Petrovaradin Fortress — the "Gibraltar of the Danube" — which overlooks the city. Its underground tunnels stretch for kilometers.
Afternoon: Walk Novi Sad's Old Town — the main square (Trg Slobode) is one of the most beautiful in the Balkans. Visit the Name of Mary Church and the Danube Street pedestrian zone.
Evening: Try authentic Serbian cuisine — grilled meats, shopska salad, kajmak, and rakija (fruit brandy). Restaurants in Novi Sad are more affordable than Belgrade.
Day 3: Saint Sava Temple & Zemun
Morning: Visit the Temple of Saint Sava — one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. The interior is covered in golden mosaics.
Afternoon: Explore the Zemun district — a former separate town with a very different feel from central Belgrade. Climb the Gardoš Tower for views of the Danube, and have lunch at a riverside restaurant.
Evening: Last-minute souvenir shopping on Knez Mihailova before heading to the airport.
Day Trip Option: If You Have More Time
If you have a 4th day, visit Kopaonik (3 hours from Belgrade) for mountain scenery or Studenica Monastery (UNESCO) for the most impressive Serbian medieval monastery.
