The Balkans are Europe's best value destination. While Western Europe can easily cost €100-150/day, you can travel comfortably through most Balkan countries on €40/day. Even less if you're on a shoestring.

In this guide, I'll break down exactly what you'll spend in each country, with real numbers for accommodation, food, transport, and activities.

Daily Budget by Country

🇦🇱 Albania — €30-40/day

Albania is the cheapest country in the Balkans. A guesthouse room costs €15-25, a meal out is €5-8, and bus transport is very affordable. The Albanian Riviera is slightly more expensive in summer but still a bargain compared to Croatia.

🇧🇦 Bosnia & Herzegovina — €30-35/day

Another budget-friendly option. In Sarajevo or Mostar, you'll find hostels for €10-15 and a cevapi lunch for under €5. The coffee culture is strong. Expect to spend €1-2 on a Bosnian coffee.

🇧🇬 Bulgaria — €35-45/day

Bulgaria gives you a lot for your money, especially outside Sunny Beach. Sofia and Plovdiv have hostels from €8-12, and the food is cheap and good. Ski resorts like Bansko are among Europe's most affordable.

🇭🇷 Croatia — €60-90/day

Croatia is the most expensive Balkan country, especially Dubrovnik and Hvar in summer. Budget €60/day for basic travel, more like €90 if you want comfort. Visit in shoulder season (May/September) for the best value.

🇽🇰 Kosovo — €25-30/day

The cheapest country in the Balkans. Pristina and Prizren have hostels for €8-12, meals for €3-5, and cheap intercity buses. Kosovo is very affordable and locals are incredibly welcoming.

🇲🇪 Montenegro — €40-55/day

Montenegro sits in the middle. Cheaper than Croatia but pricier than Bosnia. The Bay of Kotor is the most expensive area. Budget €55/day for the coast, €40/day for the north.

🇲🇰 North Macedonia — €30-35/day

Ohrid and Skopje offer solid value. A lakefront room in Ohrid can be €20-30, and a fresh trout dinner costs €6-8. A great budget destination.

🇷🇴 Romania — €35-50/day

Romania is very affordable outside Bucharest and Brasov, which are moderately priced. Transylvania is the best value. Cheap guesthouses in villages, hearty meals for €5-7, and low transport costs.

🇷🇸 Serbia — €30-40/day

Belgrade has good value restaurants for €10-15, hostels for €10-15, and cheap nightlife. Novi Sad and smaller towns are even cheaper.

🇸🇮 Slovenia — €55-80/day

Slovenia sits between Western Europe and Balkan prices. Lake Bled is touristy and more expensive. Ljubljana is manageable if you stay in hostels and eat at non-tourist spots.

So €35-45/day covers comfortable backpacker travel in most Balkan countries. In cheaper destinations (Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia), you can go even lower. In pricier ones (Croatia, Slovenia), budget a bit more.
