Montenegro has more drama packed into its small size than just about anywhere else in the Balkans. Fjord-like bays, medieval walled towns, black mountain peaks, and wild Adriatic coastline — all in a country smaller than Wales. Here's how to see the best of it in 5 days.

Day 1: Kotor — The Pearl of the Adriatic
Fly into Tivat Airport (TIV) or Dubrovnik Airport (DBV, 1.5 hours by car). Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site with Venetian-style architecture and dramatic mountains plunging into the bay.
Afternoon: Walk the ancient city walls. It's 1,350 steps to the top of the fortress — the views of the Bay of Kotor are absolutely worth the climb. Entry: €8.
Evening: Dinner in the old town square. Try local specialties: Njeguški pršut (smoked ham) and fresh seafood.
Day 2: Perast & Our Lady of the Rocks
Morning: Take a 15-minute drive to Perast, a beautiful baroque town on the bay. Take a boat (€5) to the artificial island of Our Lady of the Rocks with its 15th-century church.
Afternoon: Drive along the coast to Budva. Explore the walled Old Town and relax on Mogren Beach.
Evening: Dinner in Budva's old town — more affordable than Kotor and great seafood.
Day 3: Sveti Stefan & the Adriatic Coast
Morning: Visit Sveti Stefan, the iconic island resort connected by a narrow causeway. You can't enter the resort (it's a luxury Aman hotel) but the viewpoint from the road above is spectacular.
Afternoon: Drive south to Bar and see the ruins of the Old Town (Stari Bar). Continue to Ulcinj for the longest beach on the Adriatic (12km).
Evening: Stay in Ulcinj or drive back to Budva.

Day 4: Durmitor National Park & Tara Canyon
Drive 2.5 hours north to Durmitor National Park. This is the most impressive natural area in Montenegro. The park is centered around the glacial Black Lake (Crno Jezero).
Afternoon: Hike around the lake (1.5 hours). Then visit Tara River Canyon — the deepest canyon in Europe at 1,300m. Ziplining across the canyon is an unforgettable experience (€30, 40 seconds).
Evening: Stay in Žabljak, the mountain town at the park entrance.
Day 5: Cetinje, Lovćen & Departure
Morning: Drive to Cetinje, Montenegro's historical capital. Visit the Cetinje Monastery and the former royal palace.
Afternoon: Climb Lovćen National Park to the Njegoš Mausoleum at the top of Mount Lovćen. On a clear day, you can see almost all of Montenegro from here. The serpentine road up is an experience in itself.
Evening: Drive to Tivat or Podgorica airport for departure.
