Old Town and University: best for first-timers who want late nights nearby
Lipscani, University Square and the streets toward Calea Victoriei are the simplest base for a first two or three days: many sights, restaurants and metro stations are close. The compromise is noise. Bar terraces and deliveries can run late, particularly Thursday through Saturday, so choose a room facing a courtyard or a hotel with sound insulation if sleep matters. It is not the easiest area for a car; confirm parking and the exact drop-off point before arrival.
Calea Victoriei and Romană: the balanced central choice
This corridor suits travellers who want to walk to the Athenaeum, museums and central restaurants without sleeping in the middle of Old Town. Romană metro adds useful access north and south, and many hotels here work well for business stays. Traffic can be constant on the main boulevard, so a side-street room is usually preferable. It is the sensible all-rounder for a short visit, but compare breakfast, parking and airport-transfer terms rather than relying on a star rating.
Dorobanți, Aviatorilor and Herăstrău: quieter and better for a longer stay
These northern districts have parks, cafés and more residential streets. They suit families, repeat visitors and travellers who prefer a quieter evening to the Old Town scene. The Village Museum and King Michael I Park are close, but you will use the metro, taxi or rideshare more for the Parliament and Lipscani. Parking is generally less fraught than in the oldest core, though it still needs confirmation with the property.
Gara de Nord and the airport: practical only when transport wins
Gara de Nord is convenient for an early train and metro connections but is not the most pleasant area for a relaxed evening; use it for a one-night stop, not automatically for a city break. Henri Coandă Airport is far enough from the centre that most visitors should stay in town and use the airport rail link or a booked transfer. For a car, choose confirmed secure parking; for nightlife, choose central accommodation away from the loudest lanes; for a quiet base, pick Dorobanți or Aviatorilor. Then plan your walking distances with things to do and your dinner stops with where to eat.
