Start with the river, bridges, and market
1. Walk the old centre before lunch. Begin at Prešeren Square, cross the Triple Bridge, then follow the Ljubljanica south through the covered Central Market and Plečnik's riverside colonnade. Add Dragon Bridge and St Nicholas Cathedral if you want the short version. It is a flat, car-free loop of roughly 2 km; allow 60–90 minutes without museums. The market is most useful in the morning and is quieter on Sundays, when many stalls are closed. This route puts the city’s Plečnik buildings in context rather than treating them as separate photo stops.
Go up to Ljubljana Castle if the view matters to you
2. Take the funicular or walk Castle Hill. The funicular leaves from Krek Square beside the market; the uphill walk takes about 20–30 minutes and is a better choice if you have decent shoes and dry weather. Reserve 90 minutes for the castle grounds, tower and exhibits, longer if you stop for lunch. Check the official castle timetable before committing: tower and museum access, as well as event closures, can vary. The hill works neatly after the market, then descend to Gornji Trg and the quieter south end of the old town.
Choose one afternoon: museum, park, or Metelkova
3. Match the second half of the day to your interests. For architecture and art, use the National and University Library exterior, National Gallery, or Museum of Modern Art; check individual opening days, since Monday closures are common. For an easy reset, walk from the centre into Tivoli Park and up Jakopič Promenade; it is about 15 minutes to the park entrance. Metelkova Mesto is best treated as an evening stop for its exterior art and bars, not a conventional daytime museum. It is a 15-minute walk east of the station and can feel rougher around the edges late at night, so use the main streets on the way back.
Use the city’s compact scale
4. Do not over-plan transport. Most first-time sights lie within a 20-minute walk of Prešeren Square. City buses need an Urbana card or the current accepted payment method, while BicikeLJ is useful for Tivoli and the longer river paths; verify the current tariff and registration rules in the app before relying on it. With only one full day, do the river-and-castle route first, then choose either Tivoli or Metelkova. With two days, add a museum and leave room for a meal by the water. For an overnight base, see where to stay in Ljubljana; for a practical lunch stop, use the food guide.
