Who We Are

Paul — Balkan Guide team member

Meet Paul

Paul is one of our Balkans-based team members, passionate about uncovering the region's best-kept secrets. He's responsible for our restaurant guides and destination write-ups, personally visiting each spot to make sure our recommendations are genuine. When he's not on the road, you'll find him exploring local food markets, chatting with shopkeepers, and tracking down the best burek in town.

Josh — Balkan Guide team member

Meet Josh

Josh focuses on the practical side of a Balkan trip: road routes, border crossings, and the small decisions that make travel days run smoothly. He is usually the one comparing bus times, plotting the scenic detour, or finding the café worth stopping for between towns.

Sarah — Balkan Guide team member

Meet Sarah

Sarah keeps an eye on the details that turn a good route into a good trip. She researches places to stay, seasonal timing, and the quieter corners of a destination, then makes sure the advice on the site is clear enough to use on the road.

We're a small team of travelers and writers who've spent years exploring Southeast Europe. What started as a personal collection of notes and restaurant recommendations grew into a full resource when we realized how many travelers skip the Balkans simply because the information isn't easy to find.

We've driven the hairpin turns of the Transfăgărășan, eaten burek at 6am in Sarajevo's Baščaršija, swum in the Blue Eye spring in Albania, and gotten lost in the cobblestone alleys of Ohrid. We're based between the Balkans and the UK, traveling regularly to keep our guides accurate and our restaurant picks current.

Why This Site Exists

Planning a trip across the Balkans often means piecing together road advice, bus schedules, border rules, local costs, and places to stay from dozens of different sources. We built Balkan Guide to make those decisions easier in one place.

We are against the copy-paste Balkan trip: the rushed route that treats every country as a handful of photo stops and leaves no room for the roads, smaller places, or decisions in between. We cover the famous stops too, then help you decide what is worth the detour, where to slow down, and how long to stay.

How We Keep Information Useful

Travel information does not all age at the same speed. Destination context can stay useful for years; prices, schedules, border procedures, and seasonal availability can change quickly. On pages where those details matter, we aim to say what was checked and when it was last reviewed, then link to the relevant official operator or authority where that helps.

If you spot something that needs correcting, tell us through our contact page. We read the messages and use them to review the guide.

How We Stay Independent

Balkan Guide is reader-supported. We use affiliate links with Booking.com, Amazon Associates, and a few other partners. When you book a hotel or buy travel gear through our links, we earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site running without paywalls or sponsored content.

Our recommendations are independent. We only suggest places we've been, restaurants we've eaten at, and products we use ourselves. Read our full affiliate disclosure →
