Planning a trip to the Balkans can feel like a lot. Ten countries, multiple currencies, different languages, and so many places to visit — where do you even start?
This guide walks through each step of planning a Balkan trip, from choosing your destinations to booking transport, finding accommodation, setting a budget, and arriving prepared.
Step 1: Decide When to Go
🌞 Summer (June–August): Peak Season
Best for beaches and festivals. Coastal Croatia, Montenegro, and Albania are busy with tourists. Prices peak and crowds are thickest. Croatia's coast and Montenegro's Budva are at their liveliest. Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead.
🌸 Spring & Fall (April–May, September–October): Sweet Spot
The best time to visit the Balkans. Good temperatures, fewer tourists, lower prices. Perfect for hiking in Slovenia and Montenegro, city breaks in Belgrade and Sarajevo, and exploring the Albanian Riviera without the crowds. See our full seasonal guide →
❄️ Winter (November–March): Budget Season
Best for skiing in Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Romania, plus Christmas markets in Ljubljana and Zagreb. Prices are at their lowest. Some coastal destinations go quiet.
Step 2: Choose Your Countries
With 10 countries to choose from, here's how to narrow it down based on your interests and time:
- 1 week: Pick one country — Croatia (beaches), Montenegro (mountains + coast), or Bosnia (culture)
- 2 weeks: Combine 2-3 neighboring countries — e.g. Croatia + Bosnia + Montenegro
- 3 weeks: You can cover 4-5 countries — see our 21-day road trip itinerary
- 1 month+: Visit all 10 countries! Start in Slovenia, work your way south through Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria

Step 3: Book Your Transport
✈️ Flights to the Balkans
Major gateways include Zagreb (Croatia), Belgrade (Serbia), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Tirana (Albania), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Bucharest (Romania). Budget airlines (Ryanair, Wizz Air, EasyJet) serve most Balkan capitals. For the best deals, compare on Skyscanner or Google Flights.
🚌 Getting Around Between Countries
Buses are the most practical way to get around between Balkan countries. Companies like FlixBus connect major cities. Buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and affordable — expect to pay €10-25 for a 4-6 hour journey between countries.
Trains are slower but scenic, especially Belgrade to Bar (Montenegro) — one of Europe's most beautiful rail journeys. Rental cars give you the most freedom; book via Rentalcars.com or local agencies.
Step 4: Find Accommodation
The Balkans have good accommodation options across all budgets:
- Hostels: €8-20/night. Belgrade and Dubrovnik have excellent hostels with social atmospheres
- Guesthouses: €15-40/night. The best value — especially in Bosnia, Albania, and rural Montenegro
- Apartments: €30-80/night. Great for families and longer stays, book via Booking.com
- Hotels: €50-150/night. Croatia and Slovenia have the best mid-range options
Step 5: Set Your Budget
| Budget Level | Daily Cost | Accommodation | Meals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 💪 Backpacker | €25-40 | Hostel dorm | Street food, markets |
| 👍 Budget | €40-60 | Private room / guesthouse | Casual restaurants |
| 🌟 Comfortable | €60-100 | 3-star hotel / apartment | Nice restaurants |
| 💎 Premium | €100-150 | 4-5 star hotel | Fine dining |
Kosovo and North Macedonia are cheapest (€25-40/day), Croatia and Slovenia are priciest (€60-120/day). See our full budget breakdown →
Step 6: Essential Planning Checklist
- ✅ Check passport validity (must be valid 3+ months beyond your stay)
- ✅ Check visa requirements — most nationalities get 90-day visa-free access
- ✅ Book accommodation and key transport before peak season
- ✅ Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me work well)
- ✅ Get travel insurance — World Nomads or SafetyWing are popular
- ✅ Inform your bank you're traveling (to avoid card blocks)
- ✅ Carry some cash — smaller towns and rural areas prefer cash
- ✅ Download Bolt or Uber for city rides
- ✅ Pack layers — Balkan weather can change quickly, especially in mountains
- ✅ Learn a few phrases — "hvala" (thank you) and "dobar dan" (hello) go a long way
Step 7: Arrive & Enjoy
Once you've planned your route, booked your accommodation, and packed your bags, it's time to enjoy one of Europe's most overlooked travel regions. The Balkans offer real variety — Mediterranean beaches, Alpine peaks, Ottoman old towns, Roman ruins, nightlife, and some of the warmest hospitality you'll find anywhere.
