Choose a Split neighbourhood by your first and last hour of the day
Inside Diocletian's Palace is for atmosphere and short walks. It puts the Peristyle, Riva and restaurant lanes outside your door, which is useful for a two-night city break. The costs are stairs, sound from bars and passers-by, and awkward access for cars. Book only after confirming the route from taxi drop-off to reception; historic addresses can be a few minutes apart but very different with a suitcase.
Veli Varoš is the strongest all-round alternative. West of the palace, its old lanes are quieter but still walkable to the centre and the start of Marjan. It suits couples, apartment stays and travellers who want evening options without sleeping directly above the busiest streets. Parking is limited in the old lanes, so drivers need a named space rather than a vague promise of "nearby parking."
Bačvice is the beach-and-ferry compromise. It gives you easy access to the water and a manageable walk or short ride to the ferry port, but summer nightlife can be loud. It works for groups, beach time and early departures; it is less appealing if you want a quiet residential night. Check whether the room faces the street, beach clubs or an inner courtyard.
Near the port and Riva is for one-night logistics. This is the sensible choice for an early catamaran, airport transfer or a late arrival with luggage. You will trade peace for convenience, especially in the high season. Split's centre is compact enough that a car is usually a burden, so prioritise walkability unless you are continuing by road. Use the activity plan to judge ferry timing and the eating guide to choose between kitchen access and dining on foot.
