Walk the Old Town in a downhill sequence
1. Start at Samuel's Fortress early, then work downhill. The climb is easier before the heat builds and gives you the broadest view over the lake. Continue to the Ancient Theatre and Church of St. Sophia, then take the lanes toward Kaneo. This order avoids repeating steep cobbled streets and takes roughly half a day with church interiors and photo stops. Wear shoes with grip; the Old Town is compact but not flat.
Give Kaneo its own time slot
2. Visit St. John at Kaneo later in the day. The church and lakeside path are a better experience when you are not racing a tour group through them. A boat taxi can save a return climb, but agree the fare and return arrangement before leaving the shore. 3. Use the lake for a full outing, not an add-on. A boat trip to St. Naum needs most of a day once you include the monastery, springs, and travel time. Weather and lake conditions can affect boat services, so keep a road option in mind.
Add archaeology or a beach only if the route allows
4. Bay of Bones works well by car, taxi, or as part of the St. Naum road. It is not a short walk from the Old Town. 5. Save Galičica or a beach day for a second day. The lake shore rewards slowing down more than trying to tick off every church. Entrance prices and opening hours vary by site and season, so check locally before setting a fixed budget. Follow the Ohrid food guide for a lunch stop and the stay guide before choosing an Old Town or lakefront base.
