Old Town: choose it for atmosphere, not car convenience
The Old Town is the right base if your priority is early walks to St. Sophia, Samuel's Fortress, and Kaneo, and you are comfortable with steps, cobbles, and narrower access lanes. Small villas and guesthouses can be memorable here, but rooms with lake views may involve a climb and parking can be restricted. Ask the host exactly where to unload luggage and park before arrival. This area suits couples and short stays more than travellers who need to drive in and out repeatedly.
Central lakefront: easiest for restaurants and buses
Stay along the central promenade or in the flatter new-town streets for simple access to restaurants, boat departures, supermarkets, and the bus station. It is the better choice for families with pushchairs, travellers carrying luggage, and anyone arriving without a car. The trade-off is evening noise along the waterfront in summer. Request a room away from the promenade if you want to sleep early, and verify whether a listed lake view faces the water or only the neighbourhood.
Outside the centre: beach access versus evening flexibility
Hotels and apartments south of town can offer direct lake access, more space, and easier parking, but they depend on taxis, a car, or seasonal transport for dinner in Ohrid. They suit a swimming-focused holiday or a longer stay; they are not ideal for a one-night cultural visit. Compare private beach claims, parking, and return transport before paying a premium.
