About Korca
Known as the "city of serenades," Korça is a charming cultural hub in southeastern Albania that feels distinctly different from the rest of the country. At 850 meters elevation, it has a continental climate with crisp air and a distinctly European character shaped by its history as a 19th-century trading center. Its beautifully restored pedestrian boulevard, Bulevardi Shën Gjergji, is one of the most elegant urban spaces in the Balkans, lined with colorful neoclassical buildings, cafes, and historic monuments. The city's crowning architectural achievement is the Resurrection Cathedral (Katedralja Ringjallja), a magnificent Orthodox cathedral completed in 1992 after the fall of communism — its vast interior decorated with ornate frescoes and a towering iconostasis. May-June and September offer the most pleasant temperatures (22-28°C) for walking the boulevard and visiting museums. July-August brings the famous Korca Beer Festival (mid-August) with live music, street food, and beer tents lining the boulevard — great atmosphere but hot. Winter (December-February) is cold (often below 0°C) with regular snowfall that transforms the neoclassical rooftops into a winter wonderland; Dardha ski resort is a 45-minute drive. Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots for sightseeing without extreme temperatures.

By bus: Furgons from Tirana run frequently (3.5 hours, €8-10) and drop you near the main square. From Pogradec/Lake Ohrid (1 hour, €3-4) there are regular departures. By car: The SH3 highway from Tirana via Elbasan takes about 3 hours on good roads. Getting around: Korca's center is very walkable — the pedestrian Bulevardi Shen Gjergji is the main artery. Taxis cost €2-4 for trips within the city. For day trips to Voskopoja or Dardha, hire a taxi for €25-35 for a half-day.
