Summer is the busiest time to visit the Balkans, and for good reason. The Adriatic coast is at its best, the islands fill with festivals, and the mountains offer a break from the heat. Whether you want beach parties in Croatia, quiet coves in Albania, or mountain hiking in Montenegro, summer delivers.
Here's what you need to know for a Balkan summer trip.
Best Beach Destinations
🇭🇷 Croatia — Dalmatian Coast
The queen of Balkan summer. Dubrovnik, Split, and Hvar are famous for a reason — clear water, island hopping, and medieval towns. The beaches are mostly pebbly coves rather than sand. Peak season (July-August) is crowded and expensive, but May-June and September offer good conditions with fewer people. Full Croatia guide →
🇲🇪 Montenegro — Bay of Kotor & Budva Riviera
Montenegro's coast is dramatic — the Budva Riviera has sandy beaches and nightlife, while the Bay of Kotor (around Kotor and Perast) is more about scenery and swimming. Ulcinj has Velika Plaža, a 13km sandy beach — the longest in Montenegro. Full Montenegro guide →
🇦🇱 Albania — Albanian Riviera
The best value beach destination in Europe. The Albanian Riviera has turquoise water that rivals Croatia at a fraction of the price. Himara, Dhermi, and Ksamil have good beaches without the crowds or prices of more famous spots. Full Albania guide →
🇧🇬 Bulgaria — Black Sea Coast
Bulgaria's Black Sea coast has long sandy beaches and package holiday prices. Sunny Beach is known for parties, while Sozopol and Nessebar have charming old towns. A solid option for budget travelers who want a classic beach holiday. Full Bulgaria guide →
Summer Festivals
July and August bring the biggest events:
- EXIT Festival (Novi Sad, Serbia) — July 9-12. Europe's best mid-size festival at a fortress
- Sea Dance Festival (Budva, Montenegro) — July. Beachside electronic music
- Ultra Europe (Split, Croatia) — July 10-12. Ultra's European edition
- Ohrid Summer Festival (Ohrid, North Macedonia) — July-August. Classical music and ballet

Mountain Escapes for Hot Days
If the coast gets too hot (and it can hit 35°C+), head for the mountains. Durmitor National Park in Montenegro and Slovenia's Julian Alps have good hiking at 1,500m+ elevation. Bosnia's Sutjeska National Park and Albania's Accursed Mountains are quieter options with alpine scenery.
Packing for a Balkan Summer
- Light clothing — linens, cottons, shorts, t-shirts
- Swimwear — multiple sets for daily beach trips
- Sun protection — SPF 50+, sunglasses, and a packable sun hat (the Adriatic sun is strong — a wide-brim hat makes all the difference at the beach)
- Light jacket or sweater — evenings can get cool, especially near the coast
- Comfortable walking shoes — many old towns have cobblestone streets
- Reusable water bottle — tap water is safe in most Balkan countries
- Insect repellent — mosquitoes are active near water at dusk
- Toiletry bag — a hanging toiletry bag keeps your toiletries organized at beachside rooms and hostels, especially when bathroom space is tight
- Power adapter — Type C/F (European two-pin)
Summer Travel Tips
Book early. July and August are peak season. Rooms in popular spots like Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Kotor go 2-3 months in advance. By June, good options are hard to find.
Avoid August if possible. It's the hottest, busiest, and most expensive month. June and September have the same sun with fewer crowds and lower prices.
Stay hydrated. Summer temperatures on the coast regularly hit 30-35°C. Carry water and plan indoor activities for the midday heat.
Ferry bookings. Croatia's island ferries (Split-Hvar, Dubrovnik-Korčula) sell out in summer. Book a day or two ahead.
Hostel & dorm security. If you're staying in shared dorms, a portable door lock adds an easy layer of security — it works on most inward-swinging doors and gives peace of mind when people are coming and going.
Summer Budget by Country
- Albania: €30-50/day — Best value beach destination
- Bulgaria: €35-55/day — Budget-friendly Black Sea
- Montenegro: €50-80/day — Mid-range coastal beauty
- Croatia: €80-130/day — Premium but world-class
- Slovenia: €60-100/day — Lakes, mountains, less coast
