About Blagaj Tekke
Blagaj is one of the most serene and visually impressive destinations in the Balkans, centred around the remarkable Vrelo Bune — the source of the Buna River and one of Europe's largest karst springs. From a massive cave at the base of a 200-metre vertical cliff, 30,000 litres of crystal-clear emerald water surge every second, forming a powerful river that flows just 9 kilometres before joining the Neretva. Perched impossibly at the mouth of this cave, built directly into the cliff face, is the 16th-century Blagaj Tekke — a Dervish monastery (also known as a tekija or zavija) that housed whirling dervishes of the Sufi order for centuries. The sight of this Ottoman stone building with its multi-tiered wooden balconies, reflected in the turquoise water with mist rising from the cave mouth, is nothing short of magical. The site has been nominated as a UNESCO Tentative World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most beautiful architectural-natural ensembles in Europe. Visitors can enter the tekke (modest dress required) to see the prayer rooms, the communal hall with its domed ceiling, and the small museum. The Buna River is famous for its trout — the riverside restaurants serve it fresh, grilled with garlic and herbs, alongside local wines. The Blagaj Fortress (Stjepan-grad) overlooks the valley from the hilltop above, though the steep climb is rewarded with impressive views. Blagaj is located just 12 km southeast of Mostar, making it an easy half-day trip.
🗓 Best Time to Visit
April–May and September–October offer the best conditions for visiting Blagaj, with mild temperatures (20–25°C) and fewer crowds. Spring (April–May) brings the highest water flow at the Vrelo Bune source and morning mist that makes for stunning photography. Summer (June–August) is hot at 30–35°C but the cave's cool air provides natural air conditioning — arrive before 9 AM to beat both the heat and the tour buses. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, though the tekke can be cold inside. The site opens at 8:30 AM year-round.
🍽 Food & Drink
Blagaj's riverside restaurants specialise in fresh trout from the Buna River, served grilled (pastrmka na gradele) with potatoes, garlic butter, and Swiss chard. Restoran Vrelo Bune (right at the water source) is the most atmospheric — their grilled trout costs 16 KM (€8) and the view of the tekke from the terrace is unbeatable. Restoran Laganini (along the riverside walk) serves grilled trout for 14 KM (€7), mixed grill platters for 18 KM (€9), and excellent domaći kruh (homemade bread). Restoran Buna (further down the river) offers a quieter setting with trout (15 KM/€7.50) and lamb dishes from 20 KM (€10). Konoba Plato (on the road up to Blagaj Fortress) serves traditional Herzegovina fare with valley views — the jagnjetina ispod sača (lamb under bell) at 25 KM (€13) is a specialty. For drinks, try the local Blagaj wine (Žilavka is the white variety) at around 3–5 KM (€1.50–2.50) per glass, or Bosanska kahva at 2 KM (€1). The nearby Mostar wine region produces excellent Vranac reds and Žilavka whites.
