Travel Tips & Guides
Kopaonik is Serbia's largest and most developed mountain resort, straddling a broad plateau at 1,700-2,017 meters elevation that forms the country's premier winter sports destination. With 55 km of groomed slopes serviced by 25 lifts (including a six-seater gondola), the resort offers skiing and snowboarding for all levels — from gentle beginner runs on Krčmar to challenging black diamond descents off Pančićev Vrh, the highest peak at 2,017 meters. The ski season reliably runs from late November to early May, with excellent snowmaking covering 90% of trails. A ski pass costs approximately €35 per day (high season), and equipment rental runs €15-25 per day.
Beyond winter, the Kopaonik National Park (63,000 hectares, established 1981) is a summer playground for hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, and wildflower spotting. The park protects dense forests of spruce, fir, and Balkan beech, alpine meadows carpeted with endemic Kopaonik panjčić (Kopaonik violet) that grows nowhere else on Earth, and wildlife including chamois, wild boar, golden eagles, and brown bears. The 50+ km Ski & Hike trail system connects the alpine zone to remote shepherd huts and glacial valleys. The nearby Jošanička Banja thermal spa (58°C sulfur-rich thermal water, 45 minutes from the slopes) offers the ultimate après-ski relaxation.
The resort village centers around the Konaci, Grand, and Sunčani Vrh hotels, buzzing with a lively après-ski scene — cafés, pizzerias, nightclubs, and heated outdoor pools at several hotels. For a more authentic experience, the village of Brzeće (8 km down the mountain) offers farm-stay accommodations and traditional taverns at significantly lower prices. Kopaonik also serves as a base for exploring medieval monasteries in the Raška region — Sopoćani and Gradac are within a 40-minute drive, and the monumental Maglič Fortress (a 13th-century hilltop castle with intact towers) is 40 km away. The nearby towns of Raška and Novi Pazar add contrasting Ottoman-era heritage.
December-March for skiing (peak: January-February). June-September for hiking and mountain biking. September is stunning for autumn colors and fewer crowds. Avoid April and November when trails are muddy and lift operations are limited.
Restoran Viktor (€12-20) serves traditional Serbian grill — ćevapi, pljeskavica, veal escallop. In Vino Veritas at the Grand Hotel (€20-45) offers international fine dining with Serbian wine pairings. Pizzeria Knez (€8-15) does wood-fired pizza. Planinarski Dom in Brzeće (€7-12) serves homemade mountain fare. Mountain comfort food: krompiruša (potato pie), kajmak with proja (cornbread), lamb roasted on a spit, and hot rakija. Kopaonički sir — a tangy semi-hard cow's cheese — is a local specialty. Warm medovina (honey mead) or plum brandy from the Raška valley are the après-ski drinks of choice.
290 km south of Belgrade (4h by car via E75 to Kruševac then regional roads). Regular buses from Belgrade BAS station to Kopaonik (5h, €15-20). Nearest airport is Belgrade Nikola Tesla; seasonal charters to Niš (INJ, 120 km). Many hotels offer shuttle transfers from Belgrade airport (€40-60 per person). A rental car is essential for exploring the wider area. Ski equipment rental at shops in Brzeće is 20-30% cheaper than resort-core prices — take the free shuttle bus to the lifts. Parking at the resort is mostly paid (€1-2/hour).
In the resort core: Grand Hotel (4-star, from €120) has a spa and pool. Hotel Konaci (from €90) is mid-range with apartments. In Brzeće: Guesthouse Maksimović (from €50) and Etno Village Brzeće (from €60) offer great value. Book by October for January/February ski weeks — the resort's 5,000 beds fill up fast with Serbian, Bulgarian, and Greek visitors.
Skiing/ snowboarding: 55 km of slopes, 25 lifts, ski pass ~€35/day. Pančićev Vrh gondola: Ride to the 2,017m peak for panoramic views — sunrise or sunset is spectacular. Hiking: 50+ km of marked alpine trails in summer. Endemic flora: May-July for the Kopaonik violet (grows nowhere else). Jošanička Banja: 58°C thermal springs, 45 min drive. Maglič Fortress: 13th-century hilltop castle, 40 km. Brzeće village: Traditional mountain life, farm-stays, and home-cooked meals at half resort prices.
