About Koper

Koper (Capodistria in Italian) is Slovenia's largest coastal city and its only commercial port. The city has its roots as a Roman settlement (Aegida, later Insula Capraria — Goat Island) before becoming the most important Venetian port on the Istrian coast. The old town sits on a former island, now connected to the mainland, and is one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Slovenia. Titov Square (Titov trg), the main square, is dominated by the 15th-century Praetorian Palace (the former town hall) with its distinctive Venetian Gothic facade and crenellated roofline. The square is paved with white stone and framed by the Cathedral of the Assumption (bell tower climbable, €3), the Loggia (16th-century Venetian arcade now a café), and the Da Ponte Fountain modelled after the Rialto Bridge in Venice. The Muda Gate (Porta della Muda), the only remaining city gate from the 16th-century walls, marks the entrance to the old town. Koper's history as a port city means its architecture reflects the power and wealth of the Venetian Republic — the 100-metre-long Refectory of the Franciscan Monastery has a rare original wooden ceiling. The city's port (Luka Koper) is one of the busiest in the Adriatic and a major employer — its cranes form a striking contrast with the medieval rooftops. The Koper Regional Museum in the Belgramoni-Tacco Palace (18th century) has excellent archaeological and art collections (€5 entry). Koper's waterfront promenade runs 3 km along the coast with modern sculptures, palm trees, and open-air cafés. The city beaches are modest (pebble platforms) but the nearby Žusterna area has a better swimming beach with a grass area and a seaside restaurant. The city has a vibrant food scene with excellent restaurants in the old town serving fresh seafood and Istrian cuisine.

🗓 Best Time to Visit

April-October for sightseeing and exploring the coast. May-June and September offer the best combination of warm weather (22-28°C) and fewer cruise ship passengers. July-August is hot (30-35°C) and busy — the old town is crowded with cruise ship day-trippers. December brings a Christmas Market on Titov Square. The city's restaurants and museums are open year-round though some seasonal places close November-March.

🍽 Food & Drink

Koper's dining reflects its coastal Istrian heritage with excellent seafood. Must-try dishes include jadranske sardele na gradele (grilled Adriatic sardines, €9-12), brancin v soli (sea bass baked in salt crust, €18-24), fuži s tartufi (homemade pasta with truffles, €16-22), and jota (Istrian bean and sauerkraut stew, €8-11). The local Buža olive oil is exceptional. Koper's covered market (daily except Sunday) sells fresh fish (Mon-Sat mornings), local cheese, olives, and seasonal produce. Local wines include the crisp Malvazija (€2.50-3.50 per glass) and the robust red Refošk (€2.50-3.50).
