About Maribor

Maribor is Slovenia's second city and the heart of the Štajerska (Styria) wine region. The Old Vine (Stara trta) on Vojašniška Street is the undisputed star attraction — a 450-year-old Žametovka grapevine that has been producing grapes continuously since the 16th century, recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest living vine on Earth. It survived Ottoman invasions, the plague, both world wars, and urban development — the grapes it produces each autumn are pressed into a very limited edition wine sold only by auction (one bottle can fetch €500+). The medieval old town centres on the main square (Glavni trg) with the 16th-century Town Hall, the Plague Column (1743), and the city's signature brownstone architecture. Lent Street along the Drava River is the city's vibrant cafe and restaurant quarter. Maribor Castle (15th century) houses the Regional Museum of Styria (€6 entry). The city's wine culture is legendary — the entire Pohorje hillside above the city is covered in vineyards, and the Maribor Wine Trail (Vinagova pot) is a 2 km underground cellar network beneath the city streets holding over 5 million litres of wine. The Lent Festival (late June) transforms the riverfront into Slovenia's largest summer festival with theatre, music, and food over two weeks. Maribor is also an important winter sports destination — Maribor Pohorje ski resort (25 km of pistes, day pass €38) hosted the women's World Cup slalom for over 50 years (the Zlata lisica Golden Fox race). The city's green spaces include City Park (the largest English-style park in Slovenia) and the Three Ponds (Trije ribniki) recreation area. Maribor Island (Mariborski otok) in the Drava River is a popular swimming and sunbathing spot in summer (free access). The University of Maribor gives the city a youthful energy with numerous cafés, bars, and student-friendly prices.

December brings a charming Christmas market on Glavni trg. Winter (December-March) is ski season at Maribor Pohorje (25 km from the centre, 20 min by car or bus).
