About Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad) is a four-story Renaissance castle built directly into a 123-metre vertical cliff face — one of the most spectacular castle locations in Europe. The castle was first mentioned in 1274, but the current structure dates to the 1570s when the powerful Ljubljana-based nobleman Johann von Auersperg built the present Renaissance-style fortress on the site of an earlier medieval stronghold. The castle's most famous resident was Erasmus of Lueg, the 'Robin Hood of Slovenia', who held the castle against a 12-month siege in 1484-85 using a secret 40-metre tunnel that connected the castle to the nearby Postojna Cave system for supplies — the tunnel still exists but is not open to the public (it's used for emergency water drainage). The siege ended when Erasmus was betrayed and killed by a cannonball while using the outhouse (the story is almost certainly romanticised but makes for great telling). The castle is built on four levels connected by stairs, with the accommodation (living quarters, kitchen, chapel) built into the cliff and the defensive walls exposed. The interior has been restored with period furniture, and the halls display armour, weapons, and paintings. Below the castle, the Predjama Cave (Jama pod Predjamskim gradom) — the largest accessible cave alongside the castle — extends 13 km deep and is the longest cave in the Postojna system. The seasonal castle-to-cave tour (April-October) explores the underground passages directly below the castle (€10 extra, 30 min, slippery — wear sturdy shoes). The castle has a charming café and gift shop. The 9 km drive from Postojna Cave through the karst landscape is one of the most scenic short drives in Slovenia.
🗓 Best Time to Visit
Open year-round. April-October offers the best experience with the seasonal cave tour below the castle available and pleasant above-ground weather. July-August is busy — arrive at opening time (9am) to avoid tour bus crowds. November-March is quieter but cold inside the unheated stone castle (dress warmly) and the cave tour is not available. The castle is dramatic in mist or rain. Weekdays are quieter than weekends year-round.
🍽 Food & Drink
The castle has a small café with basic food (sandwiches €4-7, coffee €2-3, pastries €3-5). For proper meals, head to the nearby village of Predjama (500 metres) or back to Postojna (9 km). The region's cuisine is Karst-focused — pršut (air-dried ham, €6-9), jota (€8-11), and local trout (€12-16). The restaurant At the Castle (Gostilna pod Gradom, just outside the castle, €8-14 mains) is convenient and decent, serving traditional Slovenian fare. Restaurant Jama in Postojna (€8-14 mains) is also reliable.
