About Murska Sobota
Murska Sobota is the capital of Prekmurje, Slovenia's easternmost and most distinct region, separated from the rest of the country by the Mura River. Prekmurje has a distinctly Pannonian character with an almost entirely flat landscape, different architecture (whitewashed houses with thatched roofs), a unique dialect (Prekmurščina), and a heavy Hungarian cultural influence — the region was part of Hungary for nearly 900 years until 1919. Murska Sobota itself is a small city of about 11,000 people, but its importance as a regional centre and spa destination gives it an unexpected vibrancy. The city's most prominent landmark is the Murska Sobota Castle (17th century), now housing the Prekmurje Regional Museum (€5 entry) with excellent ethnographic collections including traditional Prekmurje costumes, folk art, and a reconstructed peasant kitchen. The city's Evangelical Church has one of the finest Baroque organs in Slovenia. The Mura River meanders through the region creating a floodplain landscape rich in birdlife. The nearby Terme 3000 thermal spa complex (4 km west) is one of Slovenia's most popular health resorts with pools at 36°C and extensive wellness facilities (€15-22 entry). The surrounding region is famous for its ostereia (Prekmurje's traditional hayracks, different from the kozolci of other regions), pumpkin seed oil (bučno olje — the dark green, nutty oil used on salads), and the iconic layered cake prekmurska gibanica. The region's wine tradition focuses on the Radgona-Kapela hills where the Šipon (Furmint) grape produces excellent sweet and dry wines. The Mura River itself is a popular canoeing destination with gentle currents suitable for beginners. The town's Sunday market (Trg sv. Nikolaja, mornings) is one of the best in eastern Slovenia for local produce and crafts.
🗓 Best Time to Visit
April-October for exploring the region and thermal spa visits. May-June and September have the best balance of warm weather (20-28°C) and fewer tourists. July-August is hot (30-35°C) — ideal for the Mura River and outdoor pools. November-March is cold (0-8°C) and often foggy — the thermal spas are at their best in winter. Prekmurje is a year-round destination because of the spa resorts, but main sightseeing is best April-October.
🍽 Food & Drink
Prekmurje has Slovenia's most distinctive regional cuisine due to Hungarian and Pannonian influences. Must-try dishes include prekmurska gibanica (the iconic layered pastry with poppy seeds, walnuts, apple, and cottage cheese — €4-6 per slice), bograč (Hungarian-style goulash, €8-12), bučna juha (pumpkin seed soup, €5-7), and ocvirki (crackling spread on bread, €3-5). Pumpkin seed oil (bučno olje, €5-8 per 250ml) is used on everything from salads to ice cream. Local wines include Šipon (Furmint, €2-3 per glass at local restaurants), Laški Rizling, and the local Radgonska Penina (sparkling wine from Radgona). The Radgona wine cellars offer tasting tours (€10-15 incl. 3-5 wines).
