Hunedoara, a historic town in western Transylvania, is home to Castelul Corvinilor (Corvin Castle / Hunedoara Castle) — one of the largest and most spectacular Gothic-Renaissance castles in Europe. Rising dramatically on a rocky bluff above the Zlaști River, the castle's towering spires, fortified drawbridge, and deep dungeon evoke a true medieval fortress of legend. Built primarily in the 15th century by John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara), one of the most celebrated military commanders in Hungarian and Romanian history, the castle is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture with later Renaissance additions. John Hunyadi served as Regent of Hungary and was renowned for his defense of Christian Europe against the Ottoman Empire, most notably at the Siege of Belgrade in 1456. His son, Matthias Corvinus, went on to become one of Hungary's greatest Renaissance kings. The castle features seven imposing towers, each with its own history: the White Tower (Turnul Alb), the Old Tower (Turnul Vechi), Capistrano Tower (named after St.
John of Capistrano), the Madtower or Neboisa (Turnul Neboisa), the Bath Tower (Turnul Băii), the New Tower (Turnul Nou), and the Gate Tower (Turnul Porții). Each served distinct defensive or residential functions. The most iconic feature is the imposing drawbridge that spans a deep moat, leading through a massive barbican into the inner courtyard. Inside, the Knight's Hall (Sala Cavalerilor) with its rib-vaulted ceiling and monumental marble pillars hosted feasts and council meetings. The Diet Hall, the spiral staircases, and the 50-meter-deep well carved into solid rock — according to legend, dug by three Turkish prisoners who were promised freedom in exchange for water but executed afterward — all speak to the castle's rich history. An Ottoman inscription on the wall near the well commemorates their fate.
The grim Bear Pit, where bears were once kept for entertainment, gives the castle its name — "Corvin" derives from the Latin corvus (crow/raven), the Hunyadi family crest. Vlad Țepeș (Dracula) was imprisoned here by John Hunyadi for two months in 1462, adding to the castle's mystique. The castle underwent extensive restoration, and visitors can explore over 40 rooms, towers, and bastions. The entry fee is 45 RON for adults, 15 RON for students, and 10 RON for children. Summer hours (April–September) run 9:00–20:00; winter hours (October–March) run 9:00–17:00. The annual medieval festival in June brings the castle alive with jousting tournaments, falconry displays, and crafts markets.
April to October is the ideal window for visiting Hunedoara. Spring (April–May) brings mild temperatures and blooming foliage around the castle. Summer (June–August) is peak season — the castle is open 9:00–20:00, and the annual Medieval Festival on the third weekend of June features jousting, falconry, and period re-enactments in full costume. September–October offers the most photogenic conditions with golden autumn light on the castle's red-tiled roofs and thin crowds. Winter (November–March) is chilly but atmospheric — the castle's Gothic silhouette against grey skies creates dramatic photography conditions, and reduced hours (9:00–17:00) mean fewer visitors. The best time of day is early morning (opening time) or late afternoon for the most dramatic light on the castle's stone walls and drawbridge.
Hunedoara offers several excellent dining options near the castle. Restaurant Gotica is located inside the castle complex itself, offering atmospheric medieval décor with mains ranging from 30–65 RON — perfect for a themed lunch after your castle tour. Curtea Domnească (Piața Unirii) is the upscale choice at 45–80 RON for mains, serving refined Romanian cuisine in an elegant setting. La Castel offers affordable fare at 25–55 RON with solid traditional dishes. Local specialties include: mici (grilled minced meat rolls), sarmale (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat and rice), ciorbă de burtă (tripe soup), mămăligă (polenta), and cozonac (sweet walnut-filled bread). For drinks, try Romanian wines from Dealu Mare and Cotnari regions, țuică (plum brandy), and bere (beer — Ursus and Timișoreana).
By car: Hunedoara is well-connected by regional roads, with parking available near the castle entrance (about 5–10 RON for the day). By bus: Regular bus services connect Hunedoara with Deva (10 km), the nearest major transport hub. From Deva, you can reach the castle by taxi or local bus. The castle is compact and best explored on foot. The nearby Deva Citadel, accessible by cable car, offers panoramic views of the region.
Dining near Corvin Castle centers around three top spots. Restaurant Gotica (inside the castle complex, mains 30–65 RON) offers a memorable medieval-themed dining experience with hearty Romanian dishes served in a vaulted stone hall. Curtea Domnească at Piața Unirii 2 (mains 45–80 RON) is the upscale choice — elegant interiors, refined presentation, and an excellent wine list featuring Romanian labels. La Castel (mains 25–55 RON) provides reliable, affordable Romanian cuisine in a relaxed setting close to the castle entrance. For a quick bite, several small bakeries and cafes along the main street serve pastries, coffee, and light meals. The town market offers fresh local produce if you prefer to assemble a picnic to enjoy on the castle grounds. Romanian cuisine is hearty and diverse — sarmale, mămăligă, mici, and excellent wines.
Hunedoara town offers several accommodation options within walking distance of the castle, from budget guesthouses to comfortable hotels. Many provide parking and can arrange guided tours of the castle and surrounding area. For a more atmospheric stay, consider a guesthouse in the historic center where you can walk to the castle in minutes. The nearby city of Deva (10 km) offers additional options including larger hotels and business-class accommodations. Booking ahead is recommended during the summer peak season and especially around the June medieval festival when the town fills with visitors. Staying in Hunedoara itself means you can visit the castle first thing in the morning before the tour buses arrive, enjoying the courtyards and towers in relative peace.
