About Dojran

Dojran (also known as Nov Dojran / Star Dojran) is a quiet lakeside town on the eastern shore of Lake Dojran, a warm, shallow tectonic lake shared by North Macedonia and Greece. The lake is famous for its circular shape (8.5 km in diameter), its abundant fish — particularly the Dojran carp — and its therapeutic thermal springs. The town has been a spa destination since Roman times — the hot mineral springs at the Star Dojran bathhouse bubble up at 37-43°C and are rich in sulphur and bromine, believed to cure rheumatism, skin conditions, and respiratory issues. The thermal baths can be used for €5 per person. The lake is an important wetland habitat with extensive reed beds that host a spectacular variety of bird species — over 200 species have been recorded, making it one of the best birdwatching sites in North Macedonia, particularly in spring and autumn migration. The Dojran carp (a unique subspecies of common carp) is the local culinary specialty — restaurants along the lake shore serve it grilled, fried, or in a traditional soup (€6-9 per portion). The waterfront promenade, Golem Grad Park, is perfect for sunset strolls. The archaeological site of the Iron Gates (the ancient entrance to the town) dates from the Hellenistic period, and the ruins of the old town (Stari Dojran) bear the scars of WWI — the town was almost completely destroyed in 1918 by artillery and rebuilt in the 1920s. Accommodation is among the cheapest in North Macedonia — guesthouses along the lake run €20-30 per night. The lake is best visited in summer (May-September) when the water is warm enough for swimming (reaching 28°C in July) and the outdoor thermal pools are operating.

🗓 Best Time to Visit

May to September. July-August for swimming (lake water 28°C) and thermal pools. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) for birdwatching — hundreds of migratory birds stop at the lake. Winter is very quiet — most restaurants and hotels close.
