About Tikveš Wine Region
The Tikveš Wine Region is the heart of North Macedonia's wine production, centered on the town of Kavadarci and the surrounding valleys of the Vardar River. The region has a Mediterranean-influenced climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters, ideal for viticulture — Tikveš produces over 80% of the country's wine. The region is most famous for two grape varieties: Vranec (a bold, dark red wine with notes of dark berries and spices — 'Vranec' means 'black stallion' in Macedonian) and Temjanika (an aromatic white wine made from the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape, with floral and honey notes). Other notable varieties include Stanušina (an indigenous red varietal unique to North Macedonia), Smederevka (a light white), and Cabernet Sauvignon. Major wineries open for tastings include Tikveš Winery (the largest and most visited, established 1885 — tours €8-12 including tasting of 5-8 wines), Kamnik Winery (boutique, stunning hilltop location with panoramic views — tastings from €10), Bovin Winery (family-run, known for their Vranec — tastings €8-10), and Château Sopot (organic, award-winning wines — tours €12-15). Most wineries welcome walk-ins but booking ahead is recommended for groups. The tastings typically include a guided tour of the cellars and vineyards, followed by a flight of 5-8 wines. Many wineries also have restaurants serving Macedonian cuisine paired with their wines (mains €5-8). Beyond wine, the Tikveš region has Lake Tikveš, an artificial lake formed by a dam on the Crna River — the lake is popular for swimming, fishing, and boat trips in summer. The Tikveš Monastery (14th century), located near the lake, offers a cultural break between winery visits. The region is easily visited as a day trip from Skopje (1 hour drive) or combined with nearby Stobi archaeological site (15 min drive from Kavadarci).
