About Šar Mountains

The Šar Mountains (also known as Sharr Mountains in Albanian, and the Šar Planina range) stretch across the border between North Macedonia and Kosovo, creating a stunning alpine landscape of jagged peaks, glacial lakes, deep valleys, and flower-filled meadows. The range is protected as the Šar Mountains National Park in North Macedonia, established in 2021 — one of the country's newest and largest national parks, covering over 39,000 hectares. The highest peak within the Macedonian section is Titov Vrv (Tito's Peak) at 2,747 meters, with several other peaks exceeding 2,600m. The range is known for its remarkable biodiversity, including the endemic Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce), over 2,000 plant species, and the famous Šarplaninac (or Sarplaninec) — a large mountain sheepdog breed that has guarded flocks in these mountains for centuries and is now a national symbol of North Macedonia. The range is also the source of the Radika and Pena rivers, which carve spectacular canyons through its western slopes. The main access point for the Šar Mountains in North Macedonia is Popova Šapka (see separate guide), which has a gondola from Tetovo. For experienced hikers, the trails from Popova Šapka lead into the remote alpine heart of the range — multi-day treks connecting mountain huts are possible (the huts are basic, offering shelter and sometimes meals). The Ljuboten peak (2,498m), visible from Skopje, is one of the most popular climbing objectives with a well-marked trail. The Šar Mountains are also known for their glacial lakes — there are over 60 glacial lakes in the range, the most accessible being several small tarns near the Popova Šapka ridge. Traditional shepherd culture survives in the highest valleys — during summer (June-September), shepherds bring their flocks to the alpine pastures and you can buy fresh milk, cheese, and yogurt directly from them.

🗓 Best Time to Visit

June to September for hiking and alpine wildflowers. July-August is the best period — snow-free high trails, reliable weather, and shepherds in the highest valleys. June has the best wildflowers. September for autumn colors and clear skies. Winter (December-April) for skiing at Popova Šapka.

The Šar Mountains are famous for their dairy products — fresh kaškaval cheese, mountain yogurt, and milk can be bought from shepherds in summer. Popova Šapka has several restaurants (Šarski Konak — grilled meats €5-8). Pack supplies from Tetovo for multi-day treks. The Tetovo market sells excellent local cheeses and smoked meats.

🎯 Things to Do in Šar Mountains

Hiking the Ljuboten peak (2,498m, 4-5 hours round trip from the Lisec trailhead — a full-day excursion from Skopje). Multi-day trek from Popova Šapka through the alpine ridges to reach Titov Vrv (2,747m — guided only, experienced hikers). Visit shepherds in the high valleys (June-September) for fresh cheese and yogurt. Photography of the Šarplaninac sheepdogs — these iconic mountain dogs are large, majestic, and remarkably loyal. Glacial lake exploration near the Popova Šapka ridge. Birdwatching for golden eagles, griffon vultures, and chamois. Summer flower photography (June-July peak bloom).

💡 Insider Tips: 1. The Ljuboten peak hike is the most accessible from Skopje — 4-5 hours round trip, panoramic views of the city and valley. 2. For serious mountaineering, hire a guide from Tetovo — conditions change fast and trails above 2,500m are not always well-marked. 3. The shepherds' fresh cheeses and yogurt in July-August are the best dairy products in North Macedonia. 4. The Šarplaninac sheepdog is a national icon — photograph them from a respectful distance; they are protective of their flocks. 5. Multi-day treks require good fitness, a tent or hut bookings, and food supplies from Tetovo — don't attempt unprepared.
