About Popova Šapka

Popova Šapka is the largest and most developed ski resort in North Macedonia, perched at 1,810 meters in the Šar (Sharr) Mountains, about 30km from Tetovo. The resort features over 20 kilometers of ski runs served by a modern gondola lift from Tetovo (the longest gondola in the Balkans at 8.5km, taking 25 minutes to ascend) and several chairlifts. The ski season runs from December to April, depending on snow conditions — the Šar Mountains typically receive reliable snow cover of 1-2 meters in midwinter. A daily lift pass costs €18-25. Equipment rental is available at the base (€12-18 per day). The resort has a ski school with English-speaking instructors. In summer, Popova Šapka transforms into a hiking and mountain biking base. The Šar Mountains' alpine ridges offer spectacular hiking trails with views extending into Kosovo and Albania. The marked trail to the peak of Šar Planina takes 2-3 hours from the resort with panoramic views of the entire range. The gondola operates in summer as well (€12 one-way, €18 return), making it accessible to non-skiers who want to experience the mountain scenery. The resort includes half a dozen hotels and apartment buildings, several restaurants and bars, and a small shop. The atmosphere is more functional than glamorous — this is a practical family ski resort rather than a luxury destination. Accommodation runs €30-60 per night in ski season. The nearby city of Tetovo (30 min by car) offers more dining and accommodation options, including the colorful Šarena Džamija (Painted Mosque).
