About Mavrovo National Park
Mavrovo National Park is North Macedonia's largest protected area, covering 731 square kilometres of the Šar Mountains and the Bistra massif in the western part of the country. The park's centrepiece is Mavrovo Lake, a man-made reservoir that creates a stunning alpine landscape with a submerged church — the Church of St. Nicholas (Sv. Nikola) — emerging from the water when the lake level drops. This partially submerged church is one of North Macedonia's most photographed landmarks, its white walls and red roof rising eerily from the turquoise water. The park is the most biodiverse area in North Macedonia, home to bears, wolves, wild boar, chamois, the critically endangered Balkan lynx, and over 1,000 plant species. Mount Korab (2,764m), North Macedonia's highest peak, lies on the park's western boundary with Albania — the trek to the summit is the country's premier mountaineering challenge. In winter, the Zare Lazarevski Ski Centre (formerly Mavrovo Ski) offers North Macedonia's best skiing, with 15km of slopes and 3 chairlifts. The park's beech and pine forests, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and limestone peaks make it a year-round destination for hiking, skiing, wildlife watching, and photography. The village of Mavrovi Anovi at the foot of the ski slopes is the main service hub with hotels, restaurants, and ski rentals.

🎯 Things to Do in Mavrovo National Park
Mavrovo National Park attractions and activities: Hike to Mount Korab summit (2,764m) — the ultimate challenge, starting from the Strezimir village (2,000m). The trek is 6-8 hours round trip, steep in places, with stunning views from the top over Albania and North Macedonia. Hire a guide (€30-40) — the route is not clearly marked in all sections. Photograph the half-submerged Church of St. Nicholas — best light is at sunrise or sunset when the church is silhouetted against the lake. The church is accessible on foot when the lake is low (late summer/autumn). Ski at Zare Lazarevski Ski Centre (€20 day pass, equipment rental €12/day) — 3 chairlifts, 15km of slopes, mostly intermediate. Hike the gorge of the Radika River — a spectacular canyon with emerald pools and waterfalls. The trail starts at the dam and follows the river for 5km (2 hours each way). Visit the village of Galičnik (30km south) — famous for its traditional stone architecture and the annual Galičnik Wedding Festival (July). Wildlife watching: early morning or dusk offers the best chance to see bears, chamois, and (with luck) the elusive Balkan lynx. The Wildlife Observation Point near the village of Tresonče has hides for serious birdwatchers.
