About Pelister National Park
Pelister National Park is a pristine alpine wilderness in the Baba Mountain range, just 30 kilometres west of Bitola. Established in 1948, it is North Macedonia's oldest national park, covering 125 square kilometres of ancient forests, glacial lakes, and high peaks. The park's most famous feature is the Molika pine (Pinus peuce), a rare five-needle pine species that grows only in the Balkans and reaches ages of 500+ years on Pelister. Some Molika pines here are estimated to be over 1,000 years old, with trunks up to 2 metres in diameter. The park is named for its two glacial 'Pelister's Eyes' lakes — Golemo Ezero (Big Lake) at 2,218 metres and Malo Ezero (Small Lake) at 2,180 metres — which from above look like a pair of eyes watching over the valley. These are two of the only three glacial lakes in North Macedonia. The highest peak is Mount Pelister (2,601m), a challenging but rewarding summit hike. Wildlife includes brown bears, wolves, chamois, wild boar, and over 140 bird species including golden eagles, griffon vultures, and the capercaillie. Entry to the park is free. The park road (9km from the entrance at Molika Hotel to the upper parking) is passable by regular car in summer.
🗓 Best Time to Visit
June to October. The park road opens in late May and closes when the first snow falls (usually November). July-September is the prime hiking season — warm days (18-25°C), clear skies, and the lakes are thawed. June is excellent for wildflowers in the alpine meadows. October brings golden autumn colours and clear air for photography. Winter (November-May): The park is largely inaccessible except for experienced mountaineers. The lower trails (up to 1,500m) may be walkable in good conditions.
🍽 Food & Drink
There is no restaurant inside the park itself, but the Molika Hotel at the park entrance has a restaurant and bar. Restaurant Molika (at the hotel, €5-12) — serves grilled meats (€6-8), shopska salad (€3), fried cheese (€3.50), and beer. Simple but filling — perfect after a hike. There is a small kiosk at the upper parking lot (summer only) selling water, snacks, and coffee (€1). Best strategy: buy sandwiches and water in Bitola before heading up. In Bitola, Restaurant Pelister (Shirok Sokak 45, €10-20) is the best pre-hike meal spot. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person — there is no drinking water on the main trails.
🚗 Getting There & Around
From Bitola: The park entrance is 30km west of Bitola (30 minutes by car). From the Bitola bus station, local minibuses run to the Molika Hotel area (€2, 2-3 daily in summer — check the schedule at the bus station). A taxi from Bitola to the park entrance costs €10-15 one way. By car: From Bitola, follow the signs towards Pelister — the road is paved to the Molika Hotel (park entrance). From the hotel, a rough but passable road continues 9km uphill to the upper parking lot (1,900m), where the main trails start. A regular car can make it if you drive slowly. Parking: Free at the Molika Hotel or the upper lot.

🎯 Things to Do in Pelister National Park
Pelister National Park attractions and activities: Hike to the Big Lake (Golemo Ezero, 2,218m) — the most popular trail. From the upper parking lot (1,900m), follow the well-marked trail up a moderately steep slope through Molika pine forest, emerging onto the alpine plateau. 2 hours up, 1.5 hours down. The lake is perfect for a picnic and swim (very cold — 12-15°C even in summer). Hike to the Small Lake (Malo Ezero, 2,180m) — a 20-minute walk from the Big Lake via a ridge trail with stunning views. Summit Mount Pelister (2,601m) — a challenging 5-6 hour round trip from the upper parking. The trail is steep and rocky in the upper section — sturdy boots required. The 360-degree view from the summit takes in Ohrid, Prespa, and Korab on clear days. Nature trail: The educational trail near the Molika Hotel (1km loop) has information boards about the Molika pine and park ecosystems — perfect for families. Wildlife watching: Dawn and dusk at the upper parking area offer the best chance to see deer and wild boar. Photography: The Big Lake reflected against the summit ridge at sunrise is one of North Macedonia's most beautiful landscapes.
