About Marko's Monastery
Marko's Monastery, known locally as Markov Manastir, is a 14th-century monastery complex dedicated to St. Demetrius, located in the village of Sushica, about 20 kilometres southeast of Skopje. The monastery was built and decorated in the 1360s under the patronage of King Vukašin Mrnjavčević, and later associated with his son, the legendary Prince Marko (Krali Marko) — a semi-mythical figure in Balkan folklore celebrated in epic poems throughout the region. The main church (katholikon) is a five-domed cruciform structure built of stone and brick in classic Byzantine style. Inside, the frescoes are remarkably well-preserved — among the finest 14th-century Byzantine wall paintings in North Macedonia. The frescoes depict scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, St. Demetrius, and portraits of King Vukašin and his family. The monastery remains active — a small community of nuns lives on-site, tending the church, gardens, and vineyard. The setting is peaceful: nestled in the Markova Reka valley among walnut trees and vineyards, with the sound of cowbells from nearby pastures. Entry is free (donations welcome). Women are asked to cover their shoulders and wear long skirts (wraps are available at the entrance). The monastery has a peaceful courtyard with a fountain, a small garden, and tables where visitors can sit.
🗓 Best Time to Visit
April to October. Spring (April-May) when the valley is green and the vineyards are blooming is particularly beautiful. The monastery is open daily from 8am to 6pm (summer) and 8am to 4pm (winter). Sunday mornings are busy with liturgy (service from 8-10am) — a moving experience if you wish to attend. Avoid visiting during major Orthodox holidays (Easter, Christmas, August 28 — Feast of St. Demetrius) unless you plan to attend the celebrations.
🍽 Food & Drink
The monastery itself does not have a restaurant, but the nearby village of Sushica has several options. Restaurant Kaj Serafimov (Sushica, €5-10) — traditional Macedonian food in a family setting. Tavče gravče (€4), grilled meats (€6-8). Restaurant Vodica (1km from the monastery, €6-12) — panoramic terrace overlooking the valley, excellent grilled trout and meat dishes. In the village of Dračevo (on the road from Skopje, 10km), there are several bakeries with fresh burek (€1.50) and pastries. Best strategy: visit after lunch at one of the Skopje restaurants (many are on the way south) and take snacks for a picnic in the monastery courtyard.
