About Galičica National Park
Galičica National Park is a mountain ridge that rises dramatically between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, offering arguably the most spectacular hiking in North Macedonia. The park covers 227 square kilometres of limestone peaks, alpine meadows, beech and pine forests, and deep sinkholes (vrtopki) carved by water erosion. Its signature attraction is the Galičica Ridge Hike — a 6-hour traverse along the crest of the mountain that offers simultaneous views of both Lake Ohrid (to the west, shared with Albania) and Lake Prespa (to the east, shared with Greece). This is a view you can only get in three places in the world — the two tectonic lakes, separated by just a narrow ridge, look completely different in colour: Ohrid deep teal, Prespa emerald green. The park is a biodiversity hotspot with over 1,200 plant species, including 80 endemic to North Macedonia and 10 that grow nowhere else on earth. Spring (May-June) transforms the meadows into a carpet of wildflowers — irises, peonies, orchids, and the rare Macedonian pine. Wildlife includes bears, wolves, chamois, wild boar, eagles, and the elusive Balkan lynx. There are no restaurants inside the park, but the villages on both sides (Trpejca, Konjsko, Stenje) offer traditional Macedonian food. Entry is free — there are no gates or ticket booths, just spectacular nature.
🗓 Best Time to Visit
Late May to October. The best months for the ridge hike are June-September when the snow has melted and the weather is stable. Late May to mid-June is peak wildflower season — the meadows explode with colour. July-August is warmest (20-28°C at lower elevations, 10-18°C on the ridge) — perfect for hiking and camping. September brings golden autumn colours and fewer crowds. October can still be good but weather turns unpredictable — check conditions before heading up. Winter (November-April) — the ridge is snow-covered and not accessible without serious mountaineering gear. The park road from the Ohrid side to the summit pass is open May-October.
🍽 Food & Drink
There are no restaurants inside Galičica National Park itself. Pack a picnic. The best pre- or post-hike meal is in the lakeside village of Trpejca (20 minutes from the park entrance on the Ohrid side) — a traditional fishing village with outstanding lakeside restaurants. Restaurant Belvedere Trpejca (lakeside, grilled fish €7-12) — fresh Ohrid trout (€8), grilled vegetables, and an unbeatable sunset terrace. Restaurant Galebi (Trpejca waterfront, €6-12) — excellent local cuisine, try the fish soup (€5) and shopska salad (€3). On the Prespa side, Restaurant Kaj Slobodan (Stenje village, €5-10) serves grilled meat, fresh lake fish, and homemade rakija. The village of Konjsko (on the mountain itself) has a couple of konoba-style tavernas serving simple grilled meat and cheese (€4-8) in summer. Stock up on water and snacks in Ohrid or Resen before heading into the park — there are no shops on the mountain.
🚗 Getting There & Around
By car from Ohrid: Take the road south from Ohrid past the monastery of St. Naum, then turn right at the Galičica sign. The winding road climbs to the park entrance at 1,100m elevation (30 minutes from Ohrid). The road continues to the Asan DŽura pass (1,600m) where the ridge hike starts. The road is paved but narrow — drive carefully. By car from Lake Prespa: Enter from the east side near Stenje village (30 minutes from Resen town). There is no public transport to or inside the park — you need your own vehicle, a taxi from Ohrid (€20-30 one way), or a guided tour. Guided tours from Ohrid cost €35-50 per person (full day, including transfers and a guide). Alternatively, hike from Trpejca village (1.5 hours uphill to the ridge) — the trail starts behind the church in the village.

🎯 Things to Do in Galičica National Park
Galičica National Park attractions and activities: The Galičica Ridge Hike is the main event — 14km point-to-point, taking 5-7 hours from the Asan DŽura pass to the summit (2,265m) and down to the Prespa side. The trail is well-marked with red-and-white hiking markers. Best approach: park at the Asan DŽura pass (1,600m, 30 minutes from Ohrid), hike south along the ridge to the peak, then descend to the village of Stenje on the Prespa side. If you don't have two cars, hike out and back from Asan DŽura to the first peak (Magaro, 2,255m) — a 4-hour round trip with stunning views. Alternative shorter hike: the trail from Trpejca village up to the ridge (1.5 hours each way, steep but manageable) — reward yourself with lunch at Trpejca's waterfront afterwards. Birdwatching: the park is a hotspot for raptors — golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and the rare Egyptian vulture are regularly spotted. Visit the village of Konjsko — a traditional mountain settlement with stone houses, church frescoes, and incredible views. Photography tip: sunrise from the ridge (5am in summer) is spectacular — the mist lifting off both lakes simultaneously is one of North Macedonia's most iconic images.
